Michael Ballack , the esteemed former Chelsea and Bayern Munich midfielder, has weighed in on the race for Europe’s premier club trophy, the UEFA Champions League. The former Germany international offered a surprising set of predictions, naming Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and FC Barcelona as the two primary favourites to lift the trophy this season.

The Case for Barcelona and PSG

Speaking in an interview with Sport Bild, Ballack articulated his rationale for favouring the Spanish giants, Barcelona, and the perennial French contenders, PSG.

Regarding Barcelona, Ballack pointed to the combination of talent and tactical direction: “Of course, FC Barcelona. The team is strong. They have an outstanding difference-maker [referring to Lamine Yamal] in their ranks and in Hansi Flick, a coach who’s a perfect fit.” This analysis highlights the impact of young, influential players and the synergy created by the recent appointment of coach Hansi Flick, a manager Ballack is familiar with from his time in German football.

For PSG, the reasoning was straightforward, acknowledging their standing in the competition’s recent history: “You’ve to count Paris Saint-Germain, as defending champions, among the top favorites.” PSG, despite facing major structural and squad changes, retains a high pedigree that places them in the top tier of contenders, according to the veteran midfielder.

Major Contenders Ruled Out

Perhaps more controversially, the former midfielder chose to exclude several traditional powerhouses from the ranks of the “absolute top favourites.” Ballack explicitly stated that he does not view three of Europe’s most decorated clubs as strong title contenders this season:

Club ExcludedBallack’s Assessment
Bayern Munich“Bayern are not among the absolute top favourites for me, but rather a challenger.”
Manchester City“I also don’t count Manchester City…”
Real Madrid“…and Real Madrid.”

This exclusion of clubs that have dominated the competition over the last decade, particularly the previous winners Manchester City and the record holders Real Madrid, has stirred significant discussion among football analysts and fans. Ballack, who reached multiple Champions League finals during his career, sees them as either challengers or outside the current two-horse race for the title.

Ballack’s commentary provides a distinctive perspective on the current European football landscape, suggesting a potential shift in power towards the French and Spanish champions this season.
