Veteran Nigerian media personality and actress, Doyin Kukoyi, has officially addressed the widespread and long-running rumours concerning her alleged marriage to the celebrated Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known by his stage name, Ogogo.

The actress spoke recently on the Nollywood on Radio podcast, where she provided a clear explanation for the viral images that initially sparked the speculation.

Origin of the Marriage Speculation

The public curiosity surrounding the pair began in 2022 after photographs of Doyin Kukoyi and Taiwo Hassan, both dressed in elaborate matching traditional attire, circulated rapidly across social media platforms.

The rumours were significantly amplified when Kukoyi herself shared the images on her official Instagram account, adding affectionate captions that included love emojis. This prompted numerous reports and claims asserting that the actress had unveiled Ogogo as her new husband and had potentially become his third wife.

Film Promotion, Not Nuptials

During the recent interview, Kukoyi definitively clarified that the trending pictures were entirely strategic. They were taken and shared purely as a promotional strategy for a film project in which the two actors were cast as an on-screen married couple.

The media personality revealed that she is, in fact, happily married with three children, dispelling any notion that she had tied the knot with the veteran actor in real life.

Kukoyi explained that she was never bothered by the public misconception, finding the continuous inquiries amusing. She noted that people still approach her on the street to ask, “How is your husband?” to which she cheerfully replies, “He is fine.”

The Power of Online Misconception

Kukoyi further elaborated on the nature of managing a public persona, acknowledging that once content is shared online, the creator loses control over its interpretation.

“I realised that people would talk about the things you bring online. You don’t have control over people’s judgments about you because nobody will talk about you if you don’t bring your story to them,” she stated.

She provided specific context regarding the viral images: “The first one, I was at a location with Sir Tee (Ogogo). We played the role of husband and wife. We took a picture, and I tagged it with my heart rob. And everyone still believes that I’m married to Ogogo. I did that to sell that movie. And I did not correct the misconception.”

This clarification brings an end to the two-year-long speculation, confirming that the viral images were a successful, albeit misleading, marketing tactic for a professional collaboration.
