JNTSCN Urges Stronger Safety Measures After Fatal Road Accident Claims Young Lady’s Life in Asaba

The Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria (JNTSCN) has expressed deep condolences to the family of a young woman who lost her life in a fatal road accident in Asaba, while calling for urgent and coordinated actions to strengthen road safety measures across the country.

In a statement issued by the Executive Chairman and South-South Regional Coordinator, Comrade Armstrong Okoisor, the Committee described the incident as “a tragic and painful reminder of the persistent dangers linked to unsafe driving practices, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate road safety infrastructure.”

Comrade Okoisor urged relevant government agencies and transport unions to intensify efforts toward preventing further loss of lives on Nigerian roads, stressing that most of these tragedies are avoidable with proper enforcement and driver education.

“The Committee calls for immediate steps to enhance road safety, including the installation of speed bumps in high-risk areas and the compulsory training of truck drivers on Hazardous Substance Control (HSC) and safe driving practices,” the statement read in part.

JNTSCN further recommended regular vehicle inspection programs and sustained public awareness campaigns to promote responsible road use and ensure vehicle roadworthiness. The Committee maintained that collaborative action between stakeholders remains vital in addressing the root causes of frequent road mishaps.

While reaffirming its commitment to work closely with government bodies, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations, the Committee emphasized that the culture of safety begins with individual responsibility. It urged transport companies to strictly monitor their drivers’ compliance with safety standards, adding that accountability and discipline are key to reducing road traffic deaths.

Eyewitnesses at the scene of the Asaba crash described the incident as devastating, prompting renewed calls from residents for the immediate installation of speed control measures in the area. Local road users have also appealed to authorities to deploy more visible signage and enhance lighting in high-risk zones to prevent nighttime accidents.

Meanwhile, JNTSCN has assured that it will continue to engage with both federal and state transport ministries to implement long-term safety frameworks aimed at protecting commuters and ensuring that every journey across Nigerian roads is safer and better regulated.
